Have been using our megamart store brand for 18 months. Was buying "Carnation" brand from BJs before that. As long as it's Nonfat fortified with vitamins A&D you'll be in good shape. The 4 pound boxes are $15 ea here. Trick is mixing it good and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. It's the only milk we drink. Keeps a loooooooog time under the right conditions.

Re: Recommendations on non-fat dry milk in bulk

Why buy non-fat milk? You've been duped into believing fat is bad. The fats in milk are one of the few reasons to buy milk. CLA is the fatty acid in milk that is very healthy. Low or no fat milk is junk food, with added fillers and sugars to replace the fatty acids. Buy whole fat milk. And whole fat yogurt when you buy that too.

Fat does not make you fat. Sugar makes you fat.

Re: Recommendations on non-fat dry milk in bulk

Milk is one of the foods you will miss the most when you can't get it, especially those with kids.
I recommend powdered milk to be high on your list.
Carnation tastes the best of the ones I've had. I have 6 #10 cans put away (don't remember the brand), plus a few boxes of Carnation.
Do not buy the non-fat kind...remember you add water, so dilute to taste.

Re: Recommendations on non-fat dry milk in bulk

Bought 2 cases from the Mormon storehouse 2 weeks ago.

Be sure to add a drop or two of vanilla to your mix. It will greatly improve the taste.

Also, get the aerating pitcher from beprepared.com. It also greatly improves the texture and the taste.

For those wondering about the non-fat... The non-fat dry milk is the most common form and is by far the most shelf stable.

The only way I can stand dried milk is cooked with or made into yogurt (it makes good yogurt).

You are correct on storage. I checked and the wife put away milk substitute.
I'll keep updating the Carnation.

In a time of food scarcity why would a person want non-fat milk? Why not powdered whole milk?

Powdered whole milk does not last.

That is why carnation sells condensed milk in cans. Even it has a relatively short life span.

It lasts 6 months thereabouts.

Re: Recommendations on non-fat dry milk in bulk

For nonfat dried milk, I like the stuff over at emergency essentials (beprepared.com). It mixes and taste better than the store bought stuff.

I also recently bought a container of instand dried whole milk, but haven't tried it yet. It's made by Nestle and is called NIDO (made in Chile). The best if used by date is February 2010, so I'm sure that I will use it before then. I'm going to open it when I finish the gallon of milk in my fridge. If I like it, then I'm gonna buy more since I hate to be out of real milk for my coffee and nonfat milk never quite tastes as good as something with a little fat in it.

I ordered 25 lbs from Organic Valley and stuck it in my freezer. Comes from grass fed cows and no antibiotics, synthetic hormones or pesticides.

The Nido can be found at Wal-Mart in the mexican food section. It taste pretty good. It comes in #10 cans and has a baby face on the front of it. If my memory serves me correct, its about 15.00 per can. I mixed some up and it was kind of strong, but was not too bad.

Nido is good stuff, a lot better than the nonfay dry milk. I keep a couple of 3-1/2 lb cans of it on hand and rotate/replace as we use it.

Guys can you give me the estimated shelf life of these kinds of milk. I have heard anywhere from 1 year to 15 years. It is hard to find a concrete number like regular food in #10 cans (30 years).

I own 2 #10 cans of milk, but would like to buy a case or two more if I knew it would last for at least 10 years.

#10 cans packed with oxy absorbers should last 20+ years.

I use the LDS guidelines for almost all of our long term food storage preps.. They have been at it longer than anyone.

Thanks for the reply and the the link TG. I did not realize 20 years was possible!

I will definitely buy another case or two now.

BTW, your point about vanilla extract is well taken. Vanilla extract makes many things taste better. :ok:

Nido : ingredients : whole milk, soy lecithin vit a acetate, vit d3. Makes 13 quarts. Best used by June 2010. I got this can 3 months ago.

The powder milk from the LDS Church has a shelf life of 20 years if packaged right and kept below 75 degrees. The 25 lb bag is 36.95. You get 5.5 # 10 cans out of one bag.

NP.

So many home food storage products need milk to make decent recipes. Any baking needs usually require flour and oil/fat.

This should be on the list right after beans and rice.

You should get your cook books now and look through them and get all the spices and extra additives that the cook book calls for. Sam's and Costo have spices at a fairly good price in the really large container. They are about the same price as the small spice bottle in the grocery store. Dont forget to stock up on alot of backing powder. One of those small cans does not last too long when you are making every thing from scratch.

I would second that. breprepared.com sells many spices by the pound at pretty reasonable prices if you don't want to look around.

Baking Soda, Baking powder and yeast should be on the list.

OT a little more, but a frequently overlooked item is chicken and beef bullion.

EEKS. I still have 3 jugs each of beef and chicken bullion cubes from Y2K.
I tasted them and they are fine. I have moved twice since Y2K and came across a box in storage that had 3 flats of canning lids ( 60 boxes each), I tried them out and they still work!

After a quick stroll through the usual survival food vendors I see Honeyville has probably the best deal on #10 cans of dried milk. Case of 6 cans for $66.99 +$4.95 shipping.
http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/ins...itutecase.aspx

At 24 servings per can its actually cheaper that a box of instant milk at my local grocer.

Honeyvilles Milk
Ingredients: Sweet dairy whey, non-fat dry milk solids, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: coconut oil and /or soya oil), corn syrup solids, sodium caseinate, dipotassium phosphate, mono and diglycerides, lecithin, carrageenan, vitamin A, vitamin D3.

I bought some powdered milk while i was in Utah last fall. 3 - 5 gallon pails of Morning Moo's. When I got home, I read the ingredients. It was a milk substitute! It has ingredients something like honeyvilles milk. It is in my items for barter stack now. Its bad enough that most every thing you eat these days has all kinds of crap in it. Watch your ingredients list!

Good catch - I guess that's why that milk is so cheap...because its not milk.

Nido comes in 2 varieties. Yours is infant formula. Regular Nido has a picture of milk pouring into a glass. It's also a couple of bucks less expensive per can.

Mine is the picture above. I remembered after the post that the one with the baby on it was the formula. Always helps to go look at it in the storage room before I let my fingers do the typing!

IMO. Grandmas Country Cream is most likely the best I've come across with the Mormon's milk a verrrry close second. Grandmas Country Foods is a family business, run by nice folks that stock many great products. Beware though, shipping milk may be expensive, it is a dense and heavy product, be sure you figure the shipping into the equation. The Carnation instant milk tastes terrible in comparison to either of these two and the shelf life is months not years. As far as overall best value, it's no contest, the Bishop's Storehouse wins hands down, 4.1 # can for $7.60, it tastes good, 20+ year shelf life, the best distribution system out there, you know how it was packaged, pretty much a no brainer.

I still have a couple of cases of the Country Cream left in stock from before I found the "Mormon milk source" and used some of it in my sweet rice for breakfast today! Good stuff!
